My Students

I teach at a Title 1 school in Washington, DC where 100 percent of the students receive free breakfast and free lunch. Every Thursday my school provides a food pantry for the families of our students. Despite their young age, some carry heavy loads. My students arrive at school ready to learn despite the many challenges they face in and out of the classroom.

My students are just learning how to write the letters in the alphabet.

Many of them are still working on mastering their writing skills (3 point grip). The learning tools listed in my project will help my students develop identifying letters, writing letters and building fine motor skills while in our creative curriculum learning centers. We discuss the calendar and the weather daily, my students need practice with calendar concepts, the alphabet, counting and building their literacy skills. Our creative curriculum lessons are design to encourage my students to think about different careers. However they only think about careers in positions held by community workers they come in contact with on a daily bases. Having an architecture set would help exposure them to different careers as well as help develops skills in early STEM concepts.

My Project

The Lakeshore Active Play Kit to explore the opportunities for outside learning. Playing outside at a young age will help them understand problem solving, self-exploration, decision making, number relationships, complex vocabulary, structures, healthy living, cause and effect, creativity, imaginative thinking, and their natural world by playing outside when they are older.

Students have better comprehension of academic concepts when they are able to touch, feel, and do.

Children want to see the leaves, do the experiments, touch the insects. Active, kinesthetic learning is not only more memorable, but has also help improve concentration and behavior. Outdoor learning naturally lends itself to group learning and teamwork. Teamwork encourages peer relationships and team problem-solving while students work towards a common goal. The type of teamwork and critical-thinking skills that are encouraged in a group setting are some of the most important skills that employers look for later in life. Why not start now?
