it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember watching plants grow? How do you feel when a butterfly lands nearby? I have found both to be wonderful and magical, so I wish to share my experience with my students!
My 25 first graders are located in a low social economical area.
Most of their parents are hard working, but barely making it. Most of my students live in crowded apartments or homes. My students try hard to learn even though they are English learners. Although they have a rough life, they still find joy when a butterfly floats by or smell a flower.
My Project
My students stay indoors when home since it is unsafe to play outside unless supervised. They have never watched plants grow or have enough plants near them to have butterflies pass them by. I want to teach them about the life cycles of plants and butterflies. They need to know that food just doesn't magically appear on their plates. That just as plants and animals grow and change, so can they grow and change.
I want them to feel a part of their world.
To give them a sense of belonging to something bigger. To give them a sense of ownership and possibly a love of the outdoors that go beyond the concrete jungle they live in currently.
