Children in Hospital Need Washable Supplies

My Students

My students have been admitted to a pediatric hospital for a variety of illnesses, disorders and treatments. They range in age from four to fourteen and come from a diverse selection of schools, backgrounds and countries.

Many of these children, such as those with cancer or lifelong disease such as cystic fibrosis, are required to stay long term or to return to the hospital often.

Others have suffered recent trauma, whether from an unexplained seizure or an emergency neurosurgery.

Although sick, my students bring bravery, smiles and enthusiasm to each lesson. Hospital school provides these children and their families with a sense of normalcy during an otherwise traumatic time and allows them to continue their education while away from school.

My Project

It is essential that all supplies within the hospital are completely sanitized for the safety and healing of the children there. Many are afflicted with serious disease while others have compromised immune systems due to chemotherapy and other treatments.

School is often the only part of a child's day that is not therapy-based or a medical procedure, and it provides them with a relieving break from hospital life.

Since paper is porous, we cannot use books, toys, or other comforting and familiar supplies in the hospital school. I am hoping to provide my students with quality literature in the form of washable board books.

While many attend special education schools while not hospitalized, some develop severe neurological impairments as a result of surgery or illness. These children, along with those who are intubated, are unable to speak. The "Hot Dots" activities (with pens and batteries) within my project allow these students to learn and communicate without having to verbalize.

Other materials such as the mechanical pencils, crayons and stickers allow students to own something of their own related to school. I also use my polaroid camera as an incentive for them to take pictures of some of their medical equipment to write about- helping them to normalize and understand it. The clipboards give students who cannot get out of bed a surface to complete work on.

These materials with provide students with fun and safe activities that are washable and can be shared to brighten the day for many.
