Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are an incredibly diverse group. They are black, brown, white and every shade in between. Although this does not define them, it is a big part of who they are. I hope to blister their pride in their background, and gain greater compassion who others who are different from them.

My Project

Last year I had a project funded to make my read-alouds more representative. That was a good start, but considering the make-up of my school, I want the books I read to be even more diverse, and specifically I want more books about black history, the Civil Rights Movement, and books to help reaffirm my believe that Black Lives Matter, and all representation matters.

This project will help ensure my read-alouds mirror what my classroom looks like, and I hope it will help show my students that I believe their lives matter.

When students see themselves in books, TV, and movies their self-esteem improves. When students see kids that look like their classmates, they learn that their classmates are not weird or different, they're just like them. I want to keep moving closer to my goal of a majority of my classroom library featuring books with kids of color.
