Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My classroom is a wonderful mix of students that come from very different walks of life. We work together on both independent and partner work throughout the day to ensure that everyone feels important and has a solid foundation upon which to build their future learning.
My students come from very low income families with little access to the technology that will be such a big part of their lives now and in the future.
However, they are fascinated by technology and are always more engaged in their learning when computers are involved. One thing I have noticed that they are always impressed by is my ability to type quickly to document their ideas as we create thinking maps and other documents on the Smartboard. They would love to be able to type quickly to share their own ideas and spend more time learning on the computer instead of hunting for the correct key.
My Project
Our school has invested in technology in the form of laptop carts and a computer lab. These requested keyboards will help my students utilize these resources more successfully. The keyboards can be quickly plugged into both the laptops and the desktop computers in the lab. I imagine using these keyboards to have students practice typing their phonics words on a weekly basis during small group stations. They will also use them to type final drafts of their writing to showcase them into a book they will take home at the end of the year.
To ensure I am setting my students up for success with technology, I believe these keyboards would provide the visual reminders that we know promote student learning.
Working in a Title One school, I strive to provide every opportunity for students to interact with technology at school as many are not exposed to it at home. Learning proper keyboarding techniques early in their lives will ensure they are successful later, both in school and in their future careers.
