My students need 1 incubator and 2 brooders to hatch eggs and raise chickens.

This project is fully funded

We are from a small community in rural Indiana. We are a group of about 18 second graders. At this age the students are intrigued by the scientific world. Their learning experience is amplified with hands-on learning experiences.

Due to lack of transportation and location of our community, outside of the school, the students are not exposed to many unique educational experiences. We have many students that are have low reading and math scores. Most of our schools budget goes to programs that enhance these areas. Due to our budget already being allocated funding for unique science projects is not available.

I feel that is my job as a teacher to expose the students to as many learning experiences as possible. The only problem is equipment or lack of funding for the equipment. If I receive this grant I will be able to not only teach the students about the life cycle of a chicken, but also let them become part of the process.

In school students learn the basic subjects. It is important for them to learn these subjects, but it is also important for them to have hands-on science experiences. In ten years the students are not going to be able to tell you what they read in their text books, but they will be able to tell you about the chickens they hatched.
