My Students
Where do butterflies come from? How do chicks get out of an egg? Kindergarten science is all about asking questions and observing the wonders of nature.
Our school is in a low income neighborhood located in a large urban area in Illinois.
Ninety-eight percent of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. In this weak economy our parents have been hit especially hard. There is no money for trips to the zoo or pets in the home. If we do not provide enriching learning experiences, our students will never see for themselves how a butterfly fights its way out of a chrysalis or a chick pecks the egg from the inside.
My Project
Imagine the genuine surprise and delight these Kindergarteners feel when a fluffy chick is placed gently in their hands. They learn how to care for animals because we teach them how to do it. The children giggle as the scratchy toes scramble over their palms, and those who suddenly jump at the sensation have a teacher right there to catch the animal. We stress what a privilege it is to be able to hold the chicks and how confident we are in their ability to be kind. The same goes for the butterflies. We take care when feeding them so the insects do not fly out of the cage. We marvel at the beauty and intricacy of their wings. We even feel a little sad when, on a beautiful spring day, we let them fly away.
Our children thrive on hands-on intimate learning.
Understanding where animals come from begins in Kindergarten. Questions are developed and observations made that inspire a life time of learning. You could be an integral part of that inspiration. Thank you.
