My students need an incubator, an egg candler, brooder panels, a chick enclosure, a chick waterer and feeder to engage in the study of hatching chicks from eggs.

My Students

Kindergartners are special. They love learning and have questions about everything and anything. The questions start the moment they wake up till the moment they fall asleep. They are natural scientists.

My Kinders are super bright, inquisitive and hardworking.

The majority of them come from low income, non-English speaking backgrounds. We are at an urban school. Our neighborhood kids mostly live in apartments without access to private outdoor spaces, and they don't have the luxury of having pets.

My Project

By hatching chicks in the classroom, my students will be real scientists studying embryology at a Kindergarten level. They will practice the skills of observation, researching, recording and communicating through discussion, reading, drawing, and beginning writing. They will practice problem solving, thinking ahead, and possibly learn to cope with the disappointment of non-viable eggs. They will learn about the special needs of creatures, and once the eggs have hatched, will experience the responsibilities of caring for living creatures.

Budget cuts have affected every school.

There is an emphasis on science, but a definite lack of funds to support science projects which go beyond the basics. Any donation toward our classroom hatching project, will help my students continue to grow as natural scientists.
