Chicka, Chicka, Peep, Peep!

My students need an egg incubator to experience the wonder of the life cycle and enhance their science curriculum.

My Students

School creates a safe and stable environment for my students, where they can feel free to take risks.

My students are highly active learners and motivated by engaging hands-on activities!

They live in an urban community and do not have opportunities such as experiencing a chick hatching out of an egg and the responsibility that goes along with taking care of a baby chick. Our school currently has limited science curriculum, and an incubator would enhance their education.

My Project

Before we would even get to using an incubator, the class would read stories about animals on farms. We would make charts, draw pictures, and write stories about farms and animals. Once the incubator was in the classroom, the students would have the responsibility of observing changes daily and documenting them in a journal, until all of the eggs have hatched. As the eggs hatch the students would need to count how many chicks we have and how many eggs were left to hatch.

This process would incorporate reading, writing, math, and science.

After the chicks hatch, the students would then be responsible for helping take care of the chicks. They would need to make sure they have food, water, light, and attention daily. Each pair of students would have an opportunity to be the caregivers. For many, this experience would be the closest thing to knowing about, taking care of, and holding real farm animals.
