My Students
I am a teacher for the San Francisco Unified School District where I have taught third grade for the past twenty-one years. I work at a urban school with a varied population, both racially as well as socioeconomically. Our school population represents students of global cultures and backgrounds. Additionally, our school follows an inclusion model. This means a handful of students in class are not performing at grade level and therefore, need supplementary materials. On the average, one half to one third of my class qualifies for free or reduced price lunch.
My Project
I want to begin with a note of clarification. Last spring, I wrote a donors choose for this project and it was quickly funded by other's generosity. Unfortunately, I missed an email and subsequently did not "accept" the funded materials. As a result, the project was cancelled and the donations returned. With this said, I am submitting a second donors choose for the same items.
For the past six years, my third grade class has hatched chicks as part of our science unit; Structures Of Life.
With your assistance, we would like to do so again.
Completely Indescribable!! There is nothing like observing the joy and looks of glee in my students' faces as they physically witness the twenty one day incubation period of fertilized chicken eggs. Post hatching, students assist in the the caring for and nurturing of new life.
In the past, I have borrowed an incubator belonging to a colleague who has now retired and would like to hatch chicks with her young grandson. In this sense, we are in need of a new incubator.
Your support will continue to allow my class, as well as future classes, to benefit from this "hands-on" learning opportunity. Your generosity will grant us the ability to purchase the new incubating materials we need to continue this highly educational and well-loved unit on chick hatching.
More than half of students from low‑income households
