This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Many of the students in our special needs preschool program have autism and sensory issues including oral sensory seeking. As a result, they may chew or suck on their shirt, fingers, toys, crayons, sand, or other non-food items. I am requesting a variety of chewies for our students to help meet their sensory needs.
Having sensory chewies available for our students will give them a safe alternative to meet their need to chew.
Since each student's sensory needs can vary, it is important to have a variety of textures and shapes of chews available. The chews that I am requesting vary from soft texture for our mild chewers to more firm for heavier chewers. Some of the chews have a built-in handle for the child to grab while they chew. Other chews can be placed on a breakaway cord so that the child can access the chew when they need it. Some chews are longer for children who prefer to chew on things with their back teeth. There are also smooth chewies and bumpy chewies depending on if the child likes the varied texture.
Thank you for considering supporting this project for my students! I hope that these chewies, along with the other sensory and calming strategies we utilize, will help our students to be more calm and focused so that they are ready to learn.
