Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am guiding and working with a group of 25 very eager, inquisitive, and hard-working adolescents (ranging from 14 – 17) in my computer class. As many of them come from low-income households, they know how hard their families have to work just to put a roof over their heads and food on the table. Because of this, owning a computer or tablet is not a necessity but a luxury for these adolescents. Consequently, many of them will stay after class to make use of the computers or tablets in order to finish their assignment. I have had one of them tell me that they have had to spend countless hours at their local public library just to be able to use a computer. Never, in all my 18 years of teaching have I seen such quench for learning! It is because of them that I am reaching out to you. I want to continue to provide them with the needed tools so that I will not stifle their intellectual growth.
My Project
All my students are in the new STEM program that was recently created at our school.
The STEM program aids in working with students who are interested in pursuing successful careers within the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics fields.
I want my students to be able to see first hand how simple and fun it is to work in this field and therefore need to give them the tools needed to be able to contribute to the technology field that is growing and changing so many of our work fields. Samsung Tablets are Androids that will enable these students to create Android phone applications. The capability of creating applications is 24% of their AP score.
Encouraging growth and being able to not have any setbacks because of a lack of supplies would send the wrong message to these eager to learn students. Having the needed tablets would definitely be a saving grace. As a teacher who wants to make a difference in my students' future, I anticipate each of my students obtaining a passing score thanks to their having access to Android tablets.
