This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students struggle in school, but love the game of chess. I use chess to make learning and thinking fun! While my student enjoy playing each other (and their teacher), they learn how to think and plan ahead. They develop social skills and sportsmanship. They earn self-esteem.

We are an urban school in an impoverished area of our city.

We are a middle school-high school with 95% eligible free-reduced lunch population. Our student body is 80% African-American, and 15% Hispanic. Our students struggle with problems such as low literacy, gang presence, early pregnancy, and lack of parental support. While many students find an outlook they admire in athletes, many lack the ability to perform in this field. Chess provides an outlet available to all students regardless of age or physical limitations. It offers students an inexpensive, life-long activity that is fun and beneficial.

My Project

I am requesting books and equipment for students to use to play and improve their game. I have requested several inexpensive chess sets to give to students who lack chess sets at home. I also have requested two "teaching chess sets" that will help beginners learn the game.

In our trophy case sits the chess trophy our students won in a local tournament.

It is there along side trophies won for sports and other competitions. The students who won that trophy for us feel that they have contributed to the reputation of their school along with the football and basketball players. This gives them ownership in the school and pride in themselves. Your gift will help this tradition continue.
