My students need books, materials and 20 chess sets so we can develop a chess course.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We need chess teaching material. Through the generosity of DonorsChoose contributors and members of our community, our students enjoy playing chess and participating in chess competitions. I want to make chess a regular part of the school curriculum by purchasing teaching manuals and workbooks
My students attend an urban middle/high school.
Our student body is 80% African-American, 15% Hispanic, and 5% other ethnic groups. We are 95% free-reduced lunch. We are also a Title 1 school. We started the chess club about 4 years ago through an initial grant from DonorsChoose and the students very much enjoy the material we got at that time. Chess reaches all students, the athlete and non-athlete alike. It provides them with a constructive activity and helps to improve their thinking. The chess course will deepen this development.
My Project
We need to expand our chess library and provide some textbooks for the course. I have chosen the book "Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess" because it is an easy to use, interactive text. I have also selected a teaching manual that shows how to use chess to improve reading along with some books that teach beginning chess players basic strategy methods.
Chess involves students in an activity that is fun and instructive at the same time.
Students learn without knowing that they are learning. It provides them with a source for competition and achievement. I am in the process of getting our district to recognize chess champions on the same level as champions in sports or the arts. Establishing a chess course will help them develop their minds and their social skills. It will lay the foundation for a life-long adventure.
