This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Did you know, children who play chess perform better on standardized tests than children who do not?

Serving as a teacher in a high-need school in Spanish Harlem, New York, my ninth grade mathematics students enter the classroom at the beginning of the year with less than a 5th grade mathematical ability. They face the challenge of leaving the classroom at the end of the year passing the NY State Integrated Algebra Regents Examination, one that is required for a high school diploma.

Studies have shown that students who play chess have a much better chance of performing well on standardized tests than students who do not. I feel that introducing them to the game of chess will improve their problem solving skills, pattern recognition abilities, and patience for thinking through various situations. I hope that this will help them succeed on the Regents examination.

Your help will get children's attention off of the new video games for PlayStation or Box and introduce them to a game that will greatly improve their mentalities, making them better contributors towards society.
