This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Chess is great for building critical thinking skills and confidence. Chess is not about winning at a tournament, it is about developing chess students into winners.
I work at an elementary school where over ninety percent of our students are economically disadvantaged and vast majority of them are at-risk.
All of my chess students are just learning chess, going to tournaments, learning to use critical thinking skills, and experiencing new environments. Chess team members learn new sense of responsibilities because they must maintain passing grades and good conduct, be model school citizens, and have good attendance.
Chess is open to students who are willing to strive as citizens, regardless of background or ability. I would like to increase students' interest to join chess by awarding members with a trophy at the end of the year, a game night for the families to enjoy, and clocks to build efficiency during practice.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
