My students need chess supplies, like a set of Chess Puzzles for Children, 10 Travel Magnetic Chess Sets and a copy of "Chess for Children," so that we can start a chess club!

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Times are changing aren't they? There are so many distractions, and the world moves so quick. Help us slow it down and focus on chess! (and so much more!)
Our school serves a group of diverse socioeconomic students.
The truth is that they have a lot of academic challenges, regardless of their background. With our efforts in this project, we really want to reach out to students who struggle academically. We want them involved in chess so that they can apply logic and think critically. We also want them to solve problems in a disciplined way. Many of them see a problem and do not have the patience to see it through. We believe that chess indirectly teaches many of these important skills.
My Project
A fellow teacher and I recently started a chess club for 4th and 5th graders. Unfortunately, we don't have many resources! We are requesting 20 chess boards. Our club already has about 40 students, and we are relying on volunteered boards and borrowed iPads. Even though technology is awesome, it is cumbersome to play chess on the iPad. We can't set up situations for students to practice checkmates, so more boards will be very beneficial for our goals.
The other resources we're requesting are books about chess for kids. These are great both for coaching and for students who want to learn more about chess independently. We are not chess masters, so hopefully we will be able to learn best practices from these books.
Chess teaches kids to think a few steps ahead, to make logical decisions, and to change strategies based on changing situations. I think it can be a really incredible tool for learning, especially in math and science.
A chess club offers students a positive outlet when they might otherwise just be sitting at home watching TV.
Everyone is excited about the opportunity to participate. Please help us out and help fund the way!
