My Students

I teach in a diverse fifth grade classroom in Utah. My students are constantly questioning and investigating, and are beaming with creativity. Their favorite activities are those where they can have time doing hands-on activities of their choosing. They enjoy using technology at any given opportunity, and would love to have time each day to individually explore and research topics we are studying in class.

My Project

This year, a fellow teacher and I would like to provide the students at Oakcrest Elementary with the opportunity to learn how to play chess and compete with each other at an after-school chess club. In order to make this chess club happen, we need many more chess sets so that all of the students who would like to participate are able to.

Chess is a complex and strategic game that has shown amazing benefits to those who play, including better memory, strategic thinking, attention improvements, and improved cognitive abilities.

Beyond the benefits to the brain, we want our students to be provided with a fun and productive pastime outside of school hours where they interact with others and learn what it means to have empathy and good sportsmanship.
