My students need an opportunity to work in smaller groups for lab work, and we need more hot plates to bring the group sizes down.
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Z.'s classroom raised $861
This project is fully funded
I teach in a high-need area with an exceptionally strong science program. Thirty percent of the adults in our community did not complete high school, but we offer AP Chemistry and AP Biology to our high school students. Please help us provide the resources we need to open doors for our students.
We have increased the number of students taking chemistry from under 200 to 350 in one year. We had two chemistry teachers, and now we have four. Our district is unable to provide new laboratory equipment for our rooms. We share as best we can, but we don't even have enough for one complete class in some cases.
Our class sizes tend to be large with 25 to 35 students each. With limited equipment, we have groups of three or more during some labs. We have a number of experiments that use hot plates, and having two more (which can be used by two groups each) will allow us to bring the group size to two -- even in our large classes. Two hot plates can be used by eight students working in pairs!
Laboratory work and technique is important, and I am applying to Donors Choose because I frequently find myself wishing my students could benefit more from the carefully planned program we have. I circulate during labs insisting that each person in the group take a turn with the equipment, but this is not the same as having enough to go around. With your help, the work we do can be more effective.
