My Students
I teach 5th grade in a charter school that has been recognized for both high academic achievement and student growth. Throughout the year, I have the opportunity to instruct each of our 75 fifth-graders. Our students are grouped with different teachers and classmates for their various subjects, and each class has its unique strengths, "personality", and ways of working together to create a sense of community.
Students in my classes are active learners -- inquisitive and engaged, challenged and stretched.
They are rewarded with many "a-ha" moments that come from positive attitudes and diligent effort.
My Project
Chemistry is fascinating! As a child, I would spend hours mixing random chemicals in the bathroom sink to see how they would react. (Not advised!)
Every child should have a chance to learn about the "magic" of physical changes and chemical reactions -- even those who are learning from home.
These lab supplies, goggles, aprons, digital scales, and other science materials will allow my students a chance to explore the properties of matter in a safe, controlled environment (whether that is in the classroom or at home). Sure, I could have students watch me demonstrate various concepts, but hands-on experimentation gets them excited and engaged. In addition to learning about chemistry, students learn how to follow explicit directions, work together as a team, and accurately record their findings, and draw conclusions. It's first-hand experience with the scientific method.
