Chemistry Is Math In Action

My students need 36 calculators, so that they can apply their math skills to Chemistry.

My Students

Our classroom challenge is solving advanced math problems in Chemistry when every student has a different calculator.

We are a large, suburban high school that offers many opportunities to students.

Chemistry is the gateway for students being eligible to apply to go to a 4-year university after graduation, as well as a path to many of our advanced science classes. Our students are diverse ethnically, socio-economically, and in terms of how math-phobic they are in their science classes.

My Project

I would like a classroom set of scientific calculators so students can focus on applying math concepts to their Chemistry class. If every student has the same model calculator to use in class, it can make instructional time more efficient as I won't have to run around the room helping students to figure out how to work several different models of calculators.

Once students have mastered the math applications used in Chemistry, and know how to use the classroom set of calculators, they will be empowered to transfer their knowledge and problem-solving skills to effectively use their own calculators for homework problems.
