I teach 5 General Chemistry courses which are composed of students in grades 10 through 12 and ages range from 15 to 18 years. This is in an inner city public school which is one of 20 high schools in a large urban district in Michigan. The school has an open enrollment policy and general education curriculum with students who are in regular and special education. The majority of our students are African American. The school is classified as a Title I school and over 85% of the students receive free or reduced lunch. The district mandated class size is 40 although the students are classified as high risk and each class period is 55 minutes long.
Our district is experiencing a huge deficit which is causing a strain on our students as well as teachers. Lack of departmental budgets mean that our students go with out meaningful hands-on learning experiences that are needed unless we as teachers seek and receive help. Our state expectations require that certain topics are covered in chemistry. As a Chemistry major in college I know first hand that a textbook is not enough to demonstrate certain topics and that meaningful and related labs are required to fully comprehend Chemistry.
Quality labs that utilize the type of equipment used in college science classes and in real-life applications such as laboratory job settings are necessary. But the funds and time are limited but I aim to provide my students with the next best thing that I can provide. High School students are at a point in their life where they are deciding what they want to do with their lives. Providing them with a solid background and experiences in Chemistry which they can remember from years to come is one of my personal goals. The lab kits that I have chosen will cover topics that will provide college bound chemistry students with a great start in a college level chemistry course.
Since there is lack of a science budget and time for 2 hour chemistry labs, the micro-scale lab kits are great time savers and alternatives to provide my students with hands lab experiences which simulate large scale lab concepts. Through your donation you enable my students to see and understand the chemistry happening all around them.
