Help me give my students the ability to witness chemical reactions in a fish tank garden.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Fish excrete ammonia (NH3) in their wastes and through their gills. In sufficient quantities, ammonia is toxic to plants and fish. Nitrifying bacteria, which naturally live in the soil, water, and air, convert ammonia first to Nitrite and then to Nitrate. In my Aquaponic System, the nitrifying bacteria will thrive in the gravel in the fish tanks and the growing medium in the grow bed. Nitrate is used by plants to grow and flourish. The plants readily take up the Nitrate in the water and in consuming it, keep the levels safe for the fish.
In my Chemistry classroom, visuals speak so much louder than a textbook.
I want to test 2 different hypotheses:
1. Although an aquaponics system will produce great plant growth, the hydroponic system (with precisely measured nutrients) will produce faster-growing, higher-quality plants
2. A pH of 7.0 is the best for an aquaponic system. At a lower pH, nitrification slows down and the water quality will be reduced, stressing the fish, and at a higher pH, the plants will be stressed.
Imagine a classroom where students don’t just read about chemical reactions—they witness them happening in real time. By donating a hydroponics grow system to our chemistry class, you’ll help bring science to life. We’re transforming our existing fish tank into a fully functioning aquaponics system, where students will explore essential chemistry concepts such as pH balance, nitrification, and nutrient cycling. Alongside this, we will compare it with a hydroponic system to analyze plant growth under different chemical conditions. This hands-on learning goes far beyond the textbook, helping students see the real-world impact of chemistry on ecosystems, agriculture, and sustainability. Your support will directly enhance their understanding of chemical principles while fostering scientific curiosity that extends well beyond the classroom walls.
