Chemistry Curiosities: Part 2

My Students

My students are inquisitive and eager to learn. They ask lots of questions! They not only want to know how, but why they are learning the concepts in class. They want to know how concepts apply to the real world. The school has a diverse population of approximately 1300 middle school students. The students have varying backgrounds and learning abilities, but in science class, they are able to find a common ground and passion for learning. They work as a team to learn and teach each other in the classroom, and everyone is treated fairly and without prejudice.

My Project

The book Disappearing Spoon help students make sense of the periodic table and how it came to be. Understanding the history behind the periodic table helps makes learning about it something students can appreciate and relate to. We have already received a set of 20 books through DonorsChoose and this will provide us with a class set.

The book combines literacy and science to take students on a journey.

Combining these two content areas helps students to use their skills or comprehension and deduction to apply their learning to the content and enhance their understanding.

Students will have the opportunity to read the text and make connections with content presented in the science classroom. Students will work in groups to share what they have read with the class by performing a skit, writing a song or creating a visual display of a chapter in the book.
