Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Students are generally inquisitive. They want to learn what happens when a reaction takes place, but they have been exposed to many incorrect ideas of what Chemistry is really about. We need to move beyond pop, fizz and bang and get to an accurate understanding of how Chemistry works.
Most of my students live in the middle class neighborhood that surrounds the school.
Many have moved to this area recently from other countries and are becoming immersed in the American school system. They are eager to practice their English as they work in cooperative groups in our Chemistry class.
My Project
My students need a Periodic Table poster and a series of engaging experiments that will allow them to learn about chemical kinetics, equilibrium and electrochemistry. Using easy to perform experiments, my students will be able explore difficult concepts in Chemistry. They will have an opportunity to learn how reactions occur; they will witness first hand the idea of equilibrium and the connection between electricity and chemistry and its practical uses. Requested tools to support this learning include a class size Periodic Table chart and software to enable how I communicate and provide instructions on how to perform their labs. This is their first encounter with Chemistry and we must definitely make it a positive experience that will translate into growth and success for all.
Inquiry based learning is a natural way for students to learn science.
The donations to this project will support students engagement and natural desire to explore their natural world as they learn Chemistry. The impact will be long lasting as they will discover scientific principles that they will remember for years to come. This will lay the groundwork for future college experiences and possible careers that require high functioning creative and analytical individuals.
