I am a math teacher and I am the coach of the John Marshall High School Cheerleader team. This Westside school of long tradition has been struggling to keep students on the right path of academic excellence. Being involved in an extra curricular activity helps students have a feeling of belonging as the activity strives to nurture the student and expose the student to life long experiences and memories.
This experience has been both challenging and rewarding. The challenges that we have faced have been 1. wearing mixed matched uniforms, 2. having no cheerleader experience, 3. having no coaching experience 4. not having much support. The rewards have been 1. obtaining new uniforms this year from the donations of alumni, 2. attending competitions to learn what a cheerleader actually does, 3. the coach attending clinics and collaborating with other coaches to learn what a cheerleader actually does, and 4. seeking support from other students family and friends.
The team lists 16 eligible participants. Our team needs appropriate cheer shoes. The team sizes are: 7 size 7's, 4 size 7 1/2's, 2 size 8's, 1 size 8 1/2, and 2 size 9 1/2's. These young ladies of family incomes below poverty level will appreciate and deserve looking their best as they strive to be the best academically and socially.
