My students need potato sacks, 15 cheerleading uniforms, 16 Capri leggings, playground balls, and 3 Legged Race Bands Elastic Tie Rope Straps for our field day exercise, team sports' events, cheerleaders, and P.E. classes.
I teach Physical Education at an elementary school located in North Miami. My students now have recess in addition to PE, which means that the demand for physical education supplies has almost doubled in order to accommodate all students.
My school has a high number of students who were affected after Hurricane Irma devastated our community and now we are welcoming students from Puerto Rico who were displaced by Hurricane Maria.
My school also has a high number of students who are high poverty, ESOL, and ELL, and there are a few who are Special Education and gifted.
Our students love to exercise, but due to the devastation of Hurricane Irma, the parks, and surrounding grounds are still not safe for them to play in. Also, they need to learn how to keep themselves healthy holistically, which means nutrition and health education needs to be incorporated into our P.E. curriculum.
My Project
The construction of our new P.E. court was completed last year, so our students are no longer restricted to a regular classroom or sometimes the grass area outside as there are no grounds for sports, as before. I now find more activities, especially since we were given an interim P.E. teacher to accommodate the growing number of students we are receiving on a daily basis.
The sports balls especially can be used both indoors and outdoors.
The students will be able to exercise and stay fit whether they are inside a classroom or under the trees outside of the classroom. The potato sack bags and 34 legged race bands, are for our upcoming field day and also for PE and recess fun.
We are starting our first marching band, so now we have to bring back our cheerleading team to life. Because I will be overseeing teaching the children how to march, we need leggings and uniforms that are age-appropriate for our girls.
I believe that providing my students with indoor/outdoor sports equipment and field day games/equipment will make a difference as currently, they are very limited in terms of what they do for PE every day.
