My Students
We have developed the first cheer program at our Title I Middle School (6th-8th grade) because we wanted to help give our students something to be excited about and involved in. Our program is fully inclusive. They are strong, they are hard working, they are dedicated. They spend three days a week for two hours practicing after school plus additional time practicing at home. This program has kept our students focused on meeting the school’s academic and behavioral expectations. It has kept many students involved in something positive.
Our cheerleaders are incredibly passionate about cheer and have developed a strong sense of community and connection that they did not have before to our school.
Cheer is generally not something that students are able to do until high school so we wanted to give them this opportunity to be a part of something that allows them to be connected to the school. It is an honor to watch them grow and transform into the wonderful, encouraging young individuals and team that they are in just the past five months. They have truly helped each other grow in to be their best selves.
My Project
Currently, our cheerleaders are wearing shoes that are not necessarily the most supportive to perform in. Shoes are super important for basic support for stunting and tumbling in order to prevent injury. Due to financial reasons, our cheerleaders generally cannot go out and buy new shoes for cheer.
We do not want our cheerleaders to ever feel limited because they do not have the resources.
We want to be able to give them the basics so that they can perform to their best abilities and are comfortable performing. We want them to continue to grow as cheerleaders and having comfortable and safe shoes would allow them to push themselves even farther.
