My Students

As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, they come to school every day to learn and be filled with knowledge.

Most of my students are being raised in single-parent households and receive free lunch based on their low SES.

These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical". From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom, I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day.

My Project

Chess and checkerboards will help my students gain confidence and critical thinking skills, and learn to strategize. The boards we currently have are missing pieces and are well-worn.

Students have been asking for new boards and we need them to grow our school's Chess & Checker Club.

There is a growing body of research from the U.S. Chess Federation (USCF) that shows chess improves kids' thinking and problem-solving skills as well as their math and reading test scores.

Chess and checkers get students strategizing! Students already love playing the game and it allows them to be competitive in a non-sport activity.

Celebrate Black teachers and kids! This project supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of students are Black.
