My Students
Each day, my students enter the room excited to learn about the world around them. The day is full of learning new things- of discovering, of invention, and of laughter. Any day is a good day to learn in my classroom and the lessons are full of hands-on learning activities and practices.
If you were to see the smiling faces of my students, you would truly feel the joy I experience each day as I step in front of my class.
Each child in my class has a spark of curiosity and imagination that can ignite the day's learning. The students in my school come from many different countries and cultures. Though not from economically advantaged backgrounds, our students shine with positivity and talent. Their knowledge, experience and determination shows in their academic growth. Many of the day's great discussions arise from my students. They dive into their studies with zeal, and ask many, many questions.
There are over 19 languages spoken at our school. Our school is nestled in the heart of our bustling city. Students in my class learn with a view of the city skyline from our classroom window.
Once the bell rings and classes begin, the learning adventure starts.
My Project
Imagine students peering over the top of plastic chess pieces. They are analyzing a move, considering a strategy. They are thinking ahead one - maybe two moves. If they plan right and anticipate, the king will be in check.
Imagine numerous pairs of students in similar situations, learning a game that requires strategy, thinking and concentration. They hover over the pieces, watch as pieces are captured, pay attention to detail, and thoughtfully learn plays to reach their end-to capture the King.
With several chess sets acquired, each one of my students will have the opportunity to learn chess, a very old game with a rich and fascinating history.
Students will pair up, learn all the moves, learn the rules and compete against each other in a positive learning environment. Recesses lost to bad weather will become an extra opportunity to try a new tactic on the chess board.
But it won't end there. After school, students can put their chess skills to the test in a chess club.
For many of my students, this will be their first experience to see a chess board.
By providing students the opportunity to play chess, you are giving my students a way to socialize, gain important analytical skills and to learn a game that requires concentration and strategy. These skills will carry over to their problem solving in their classwork. They will have fun, win or lose, and improve their grades and friendships.
Students will enjoy the challenge that chess inevitably provides.
