Checking The Understanding Of All Students

My students need 1 quick response voting system to check their understanding of the material learned in class.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Broullire's classroom raised $1,055

This project is fully funded

I teach 10th grade DC History and 11th grade US History in a public charter high school in Washington, DC. 100% of my students are African American and 95% of my students are from Wards 7 & 8. Unfortunately, this is the area of DC most plagued by crime and poverty. Our school is a beacon of hope for our students and their families. We continue to have 100% of our senior students accepted into college.

Because our goal is to prepare our students for college, we must provide them with a challenging and rigorous curriculum. In my social studies classroom, this means my students are examining primary source documents, making "real world" connections to the material, and improving their literacy skills. Before this can happen, however, I have to make sure I'm not leaving students in the dust. This is often very challenging. When I check their understanding on paper, it takes me quite some time to go around the room to check. When I verbally check for understanding, many of my students (particularly special education students) are very shy and do not have the confidence to answer. When I give them an exit slip at the end of class, I often find gaps in their understanding that should have been corrected earlier in the class. I need a new, creative way to check their understanding. Unfortunately, our school does not have the resources to purchase a system.

This is where I need your help. With a quick response voting system, I can instantly tell which students understand the content and which students are still struggling. This would allow me to more effectively differentiate instruction for them. In today's testing society, it's even more important for our students to be as adept at answering multiple choice questions as their peers at other schools. By exposing them to similar questions they will see on the standardized tests, they will not only learn class content, but they will be prepared to perform well on these important tests. Although we never teach only to the test, we strive to make sure we do not leave any student behind. This voting machine will increase their literacy skills and critical thinking skills--two essential skills needed in college.

Please make it possible for my students to feel comfortable checking their understanding in class. This will also be an amazing review for their quizzes or exams! Not only can I more easily and frequently check their understanding of class content before going further, but my students will be more prepared to think critically about the social studies content.
