How would you feel if every day, you could take home a book you love from your classroom library to share with your family and friends? My first grade students LOVE to read and share all the reading strategies they are learning with those who care about them at home? Most of these students do not have a single book to call their own at home. Further, those with parents who have busy work schedules are often unable to visit the public library. Therefore, the books each student checks out from our classroom library may be the only ones they get to show and read to their family at home. However, it is essential that each book come back and forth from school to home safely!
So what's the problem? Our classroom library is full of wonderful books the students love to read over and over again, but we don't have a great way for books to be checked out and returned to school clean, neat, and undamaged. Research shows that one of the single best ways to improve reading achievement is to read as much as possible, and I want my students to be able to read at home - to themselves, siblings, parents, and other family members. My students are allowed to check out a book each day from our classroom to take home and enjoy, and over time, books that are kept in thin, easily-ripped baggies become worn and damaged. When a baggie is ripped or loses its ability to seal shut, books can get wet if the student walks home in the rain. The baggies bend easily; therefore, the book inside is likely to bend or become damaged as well. This leads to fewer books being available for students to check out, especially those that are well-read classroom favorites.
A simple solution to our problem is for each child to have a See & Store Book Pouch. These are clear vinyl pouches that are firm and strong, unlike disposable zipper baggies. Each bag holds several books, and keeps them protected from getting wet, torn, or bent. I believe that by having a class set of See & Store Book Pouches, each student will be able to bring books home to read to their families, and return them to school for others to enjoy. These pouches will keep our classroom library full of great books, encourage students to be responsible, and encourage home-school literacy connections.
Your donation will help encourage my students to love to read, and continue to share their learning with the family and friends who care for them at home.
