My 6th graders are a diverse group of preteens who love to read, write, draw, and explore. They are inquisitive students who love to read, love technology, and need a challenge! They thrive in interactive small group learning environments within my classroom, and sometimes in independently designed creative projects. My students are creative, thoughtful, and full of wonder!
My students would love to have a fantastic collection of inspirational "kid friendly" Biographies and Memoirs available in our classroom library.
These books would engage all my students! My students thrive on hands-on activities and engaging classroom lessons that allow them to think outside the box and challenge themselves to find solutions! I give students the freedom to show that they have mastered the state standards through art, writing, cooperative group projects, and technology. Rather than completing more of the same question/answer tests, essays, and repetitive "reports" they might be accustomed to from elementary school, I try to challenge my middle schoolers with new ways to demonstrate their knowledge through innovative projects like our "Who's Who" Biography Project.
My Project
My 6th grade students love to read. Most of them are voracious readers who typically choose fiction, fantasy, and even dystopian book titles. It's rare that I see them reading Biographies or Memoirs. I recently realized that is because I simply don't have very many exciting titles of this genre in my classroom to offer! As we begin the new year, I will begin teaching a Nonfiction Reading Unit, and I need great texts for this challenging teaching endeavor. I have a number of short texts and articles, access to websites, and of course their history textbooks to use for these lessons. However, I would like students to have an exciting book shelf full of new biographies which would enable them to CHOOSE the "cool" nonfiction books that interest them. I would also like to offer a variety of nonfiction "book club" choices for group/team reading. Nonfiction reading can be so rewarding when kids are given options!
I would love to see my students reading about famous people in history who have made a positive difference in our world.
I would like more nonfiction titles that excite kids, spark empathy, and teach tolerance to my readers. These students are our future leaders. They need great books that inspire, books that make them think (perhaps a little outside the box), and books that will help shape them into amazing young adults!
