My students need a tried and true library of favorite comfort books. The children also need notebooks, crayons and tote bags to keep their supplies while in the hospital.
All of my students are currently in the hospital as a result of illness or injury. They are attending school bedside while receiving medical care and various treatments. The students are often distracted from learning because of pain, medication, sadness, and anger. The children in my class are from New York and the surrounding areas. We also accept and treat children from other states and from out of this county.
My students, four to twenty-one years of age, are currently hospitalized for a variety of childhood diseases and accidents.
They receive medical and educational intervention daily while in the hospital. It is our goal to reunite students with their friends, families, and home district school classmates. My kids are diagnosed with diabetes, physical delays, cognitive and social delays as a result of accidents and illness. Students have a wide range of challenges which are a result of current illness and new life-altering diagnosis.
I work for NYC DOE Hospital Schools which supports teachers in thirty-eight NYC Hospitals. My students are warriors and they fight the fight every day, pushing past the pain. My students are often newly diagnosed with life-threatening diseases such as diabetes and seizure disorders.
My Project
One chance to make a first impression! Children come into the hospital sick, scared and often in pain. As a hospital school teacher, it is my responsibility to meet the educational needs of each student while in the hospital. Upon entering the hospital room for the first time it is very important to both child and parent that the first contact with a teacher be engaging, warm, and inviting. If the first meeting is successful the family and child will welcome instruction for the following days while hospitalized.
"I shall pass this way but once any good I can do let me do it now for I shall never pass this way again" By offering each child a colorful tote bag filled with a few basic supplies they already are given a little control over their environment.
Each child can select the color of their supplies to add to their bag.
Comfort books will be part of a traveling library allowing the students to select the book they want to read. Children have favorite stories that make them feel safe and at home. It is very important to be able to offer child-directed reading materials upon admission.
