This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
When a teacher teaches a lesson, they generally model what is being learned and then ask the students to attempt it independently or in small groups. As a teacher, I would model this on chart paper and then hang it up in my classroom as a reference for my students to refer to.
I currently teach two classes of students.
We work on Reading, Writing, Social Studies and Word Work. They are extremely passionate about their studies and take pride, as do I, in their classroom and the work they do. A high percentage of students at my school are receiving free or reduced price lunch. In addition, one of my classes is comprised of students who are former ELLs.
My Project
When I teach, I can model using the dry erase board, which is a fantastic resource. The downside of that is, it is then erased for the next lesson. Having the chart paper, enables my students to have a reference of what they have been learning. Teaching 2 classes the same material (modified to reach each specific classes needs), means twice as much chart paper. I will make every effort to conserve, but being able to track their learning through charts is invaluable.
My project is important because many students are visual learners and having the charts hanging in the room is vital to their continued understanding.
It enables myself and the classes to continually refer to them. These charts can be used over again and sometimes, at the end of the year, the students love to take the home with them.
