This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
In a world of high-stakes testing, subjects like science, social studies, art, music, and physical education often get drastically reduced or out-right eliminated. My 5th grade students face the challenge of catching up with years of missed science curriculum all within one short year.
Our school is located in a largely immigrant, low-income community.
We are a public K-6 school serving roughly 600 students. Nearly 80% of our students are English learners and 100% qualify for free/reduced lunch (low-income indicator), but our students are eager to be the best they can be.
My Project
This project requests a set of various Bill Nye The Science Guy DVDs. Each of the chosen videos will act as reinforcement for key science standards while helping to build excitement, interest, and curiosity about science. Our school has resources to teach science through hands-on, inquiry-based curriculum, but years of science curriculum neglect is not address by one single method.
These videos will supplement our current curriculum to reach more students and help solidify the learning that is taking place. Bill Nye's infamous methods engage students in science, but also help to build life-long scientific curiosity by connecting students' lives to what they are learning.
In California, students are expected to take a state test in Science at the end of the school year.
Unfortunately, they are usually unprepared as students come in to 5th grade with very little background knowledge of science. In a year, we work to get students caught up on all the material that was set aside in previous years. This set of donations will allow us to reinforce science concepts in a manner that reaches out to many more students than other "traditional" ways like reading a textbook.
