My Students
My students are 5th graders with a passion for learning. Unfortunately they have the odds stacked against them. My kids are growing up in abject poverty in an extremely violent neighborhood. Our school and my students are incredibly resource deficient. 100% of the students at my school receive free or reduced priced lunch. Most of them are performing significantly below grade level. They are statistically some of the absolute "lowest" performing students in the state of Florida. They have to deal with hardship after hardship inside and outside of school and yet, they are some of the most resilient and passionate kids you will ever meet.
These kids have a particularly special place in my heart because I've taught them before.
I am determined to make our time together more meaningful than ever and I refuse to let our lack of access to resources or historically low academic achievement hold us back. We can make huge strides this year, but I'm going to need the help of a village!
My Project
We have been working diligently to ensure that every student has their own laptop to use each day. We are so close to that goal! Now, we've encountered a new hardship: We don't have a secure location to store our laptops and they have no way of charging them! The race to find an outlet and get their first has become an everyday struggle. We have extension cords and individual charger cords all over the place to help us charge. It is really kind of dangerous to navigate.
Having a cart that will safely store our technology would be extremely helpful for us because it would mean we know our computers are locked up safely, charged, and ready for class everyday!
