My Students
In September, I will have the opportunity to reconnect with a group of students that I taught in first grade. They are intelligent, kind, and full of potential. We all missed out on so much due to COVID, and I can't wait to get back to learning!
My Project
Although we are hoping to return to the classroom in September, I want to put literature in my third graders' hands that reflect their culture and skin color in a positive and empowering way. I want to give students books that they fall in love with and connect to.
An Ode to the Fresh Cut, and Brown Girl Dreaming are just two titles where students can identify with the characters.
I want students to think of the character as someone who could be their friend or neighbor. I hope the students can learn about Jean-Michael Basquiat, an artist who lived in an urban setting and had his work exhibited in galleries and museums internationally. I want to inspire my students to dream big as well as help them to love reading.
