This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Every day I look out into a sea of eager, inquisitive faces and say, "Good Morning. boys and girls." My twenty-two amazing, third graders attend a community public school and reside in a high poverty area located in Bronx, NY. In school, they are learning to have a growth mindset and to learn how to live with empathy, flexibility, resilence, persistence and optimism.
School is their "home" and they come every day.
With the challenges they face, they enjoy reading chapter books, writing poetry and learning about science. They also love to build things and participate in art activities.
My Project
There is a reading unit in our reading curriculum where students are studying characters in series books. They follow the characters throughout the series and infer and come up with theories and character traits about the characters. It is essential that the students have access to the series books so they can form book clubs and engage in conversations about the books. I have requested books like Nate the Great, Cam Jansen and June B. Jones.
This year, my third graders will taking their first standardized reading test The test measures their reading comprehension.
Therefore, it is important for me as a third grade teacher to provide high level thinking reading instruction for the students to be better equipped for this test. One way to do this is through character study.
