Character Education

My students need subscriptions to Scholastic News and social skills books to be able to explore the world around them, and learn specific social skills and critical thinking skills to become productive citizens.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

This is a 5th grade English language learner inclusion classroom. Majority of my students speak another language at home. We are a Title 1 school, so most of our students receive free/reduced lunch. In addition, several students struggle with the effects of trauma as a result of being exposed to drugs and violence. This area is known for gang activity. School is a safe place for students and a place where they can be nurtured and grow.

I have high standards for students and create structured routines that help students succeed.

My goal is to provide students with social, emotional and physical supports so that their brains can be ready for rigorous learning. This includes daily social education such as read alouds, teaching kind communication skills, self regulation strategies and allowing for alternative seating, physical movement and brain breaks.

Your support is greatly appreciated.

My Project

Scholastic News magazines will allow us to learn about current events and the world around us while improving our literacy skills. Students need to be able to apply their literacy skills to gathering real world information. In addition, the current events provide an opportunity for students to learn about the world in ways they may not be getting access to at home. Lastly, by studying current events my students will develop critical thinking skills to help them become active and informed citizens.

The books are for read alouds to promote social skills.

I love all books by Julia Cook, so I am requesting a few to add to my collection. These books become weekly studies of creating thoughtful habits, developing values and manners.

Thank you for taking the time to consider this project. These resources will create significant access and advocacy opportunities for my students.
