Help me give my students some beginning chapter books like Mercy Watson and simple graphic novels such as Ricky Ricotta to get them excited about sustained reading.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
What makes my students so special is their enthusiasm for stories and their genuine love of learning. They light up during read-alouds, and I love sharing chapter books that create that “can’t put it down” feeling. My goal is always to open the door to sustained, joyful reading.
This project will help me add engaging early chapter books to our classroom library, including favorites like Dav Pilkey’s Dragon series, Kate DiCamillo’s Mercy Watson books, the Ricky Ricotta series, Katie Woo, and The Bailey School Kids graphic novels.
These fun, accessible stories are perfect for developing readers and are key to building a strong literacy foundation in second grade.
One way I excite my students about longer books is by reading aloud early chapter books, where I can introduce them to different genres and model how to think deeply about characters, plot, point of view, and themes.
To support all kinds of readers, I’m constantly growing our library with books that appeal to different interests and reading levels. I want every student to feel confident and excited as they explore the world through reading, even as they continue on their journey to proficiency. That’s why these books would be such a valuable addition.
