Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students live in a very low-income urban area and attend a Title I school where every student receives free breakfast and lunch. More than 71% of students at my school identify as English language learners and more than 60% fall into the category of economically disadvantaged. More than 60% of my students report they do not have books at home.
Many of my students' parents have a limited or interrupted educational background, which means that in most cases, the only reading and writing support my students receive are here at school.
My school's budget allows for desks, chairs, and basic office supplies. Teachers at my school must provide any additional furnishings, learning supports (such as manipulatives and games). In transitioning back to in-person learning this school year, teachers at my school are working diligently to find and create materials to support our new ELA and math curricula. We're also working to identify and analyze learning gaps among our students who have each engaged in one to one and a half years of remote learning. For some of my students, this will be their first time in a classroom since March 2020.
My Project
The students in my 4th grade class are developing their literacy skills at varying levels. In order to keep students engaged and feeling the right amount of challenge, I've created book clubs to give the power back to students when it comes to literacy. Students discussed their own interests, favorite authors, and preferred genres to generate a list of texts they would like to read with their peers. Students meet everyday for 30-40min to engage in shared reading, analyze and discuss the text, and complete a wide range of activities for each chapter. These book sets will help foster my students' love of reading and equip them with the tools they need to engage with texts in challenging ways.
