Hi! I teach 2nd grade at Vinson-Bynum Elementary School in Wilson, North Carolina. A huge part of our teaching focus in second grade is reading. In my three years of teaching, I have noticed that my students do not want to take the time to read chapter books. They feel that they are too long, take too much time and are not successful at the Accelerated Reader tests.
With this grant, I would like to purchase a classroom set of two different chapter book titles. The titles are Young Cam Jansen and the Dinosaur Park & The Mystery of the Stolen Bike. These books are considered beginner chapter books, which would be perfect for my readers.
The books will be used in whole group discussions and activities. For homework, students will read a chapter over one night or two depending on the length of the chapter. Once the chapter is read, the class will discuss, make questions and participate in a short activity about the chapter. After the entire book is read, the student will take the Accelerated Reader (AR) test on that particular title. Since we have been practicing the type of questions given on AR tests during class discussions, students will be very successful on the actual AR tests.
My goal is to not only improve their ability to read and comprehend the longer texts but also to motivate them choose to read other chapter books. If I can excite them with this project, then maybe they will continue to enjoy reading well into their adult years.
