"Let us remember: One book, one pen, one child, and one teacher can change the world." - Malala Yousafzai
In our Title 1 public school in a leafy neighborhood have arrived refugees from far parts of the globe. These new students often have never been educated in the war-torn countries called home.
We are grasping for materials to help educate these new immigrants for the first time.
My classroom books are way too difficult to provide the very basics. I am seeking the earliest, quality, readers to help bridge the gaps. There is so much learning to be done, and we can do it, one step at a time.
Education can truly change the world. Girls and boys have been provided opportunities of a lifetime, and we need to help them make the most of it, quickly. We must all work together for a positive outcome.
My Project
Students will be given these leveled readers to place in book boxes for their independent reading. Familiar books build continuity and stamina, producing better readers. We need enough books to provide a variety for all the early learning on campus.
Students will meet with teachers in small reading groups and one on one for reading lessons. While other small groups are meeting with the teacher, these students will be occupied by books at their reading capacity.
Our students will have a chance to develop the ability to read with emergent readers.
This is the first opportunity many have had to be educated, to be in a class, to hold a book. Students will write reading responses to books just as others are doing. Without these engaging early readers, our newly arrived students will be lost. With them, donors will help change the world, one child, one book, at a time.
Thank you.
