Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students' age range from ten to fifteen years of age and ninety-two percent of my students are Hispanic. Our district receives one hundred percent free lunch and we are above the average poverty line by fourteen percent. But this does not tell the true story. These students are wonderful, culturally proud and energetic. My students are strong and resilient and come into school everyday with such a joy. It is an honor to teach these students because we are the same. We are cut from the same cloth and share similar values. We might have unique challenges but we will persevere! My students don’t have the same resources as other urban city schools and we are starting miles behind because of it. This is why we need your help.

My Project

These Heart Rate monitors and bands will allow us to accurately measure the impact of fitness on academics. At my school, we believe that if students are increasing their Heart Rates, it will positively impact the way they learn. If we have more Heart Rate monitors, we will have the flexibility to monitor trends and measure the validity of what is already know: the higher the fitness, the better the learning. By providing us with Heart Rate monitors, we can prove that physical education is the space where students are improving their academics. This is where policy change can begin and we can start mandating time towards physical education.
