My Project
The pandemic interrupted campus activities and changed the lives of students in profound ways. While teenagers usually were able to maintain ties to close family and friends, they lost opportunities to interact in person with diverse groups on campus and in the community. A lack of experience with peers from a variety of backgrounds at this stage of social and emotional development led to some awkwardness and misunderstandings when students were finally allowed back on campus.
Books with multicultural and local Hawaii perspectives engage teens in rich discussions that lead them to reflect on their changing identities and responsibilities.
Local Hawaii writers explore subjects that resonate with my high schoolers and get them to think deeply about themselves in terms of their relationships to their communities, cultures, families, friends, and peers.
Social-emotional and academic learning takes place when students have the chance to read and discuss relevant local, national and global issues and the current shifts, including those in technology, mental health, race, gender, poverty, juvenile justice, native values, immigration, diaspora, and the American Dream.
