Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are running out of double-copies of high interest books. These "twin-books" are essential for their partnership book discussions.
My fifth-grade students are a very enthusiastic group of readers.
Most of the students in my class have been attending their neighborhood school since pre-K, therefore they have created a very positive classroom environment. They have a wide range of abilities and needs, but one thing they all have in common is that their favorite part of the day is reader's workshop. They love to engage in independent reading, partnership reading, and book clubs on a daily basis.
Our school is located in an inner city area and serves a diverse population. Deaf and Hard of Hearing, Gifted, Special Education, and English Language Development are some of the programs within our school and classrooms.
My Project
These "twin-books" will support my students in their partnership reading during our reader's workshop. They will be able to engage in authentic and immediate book discussions with a reading partner that shares similar reading abilities and interests. By engaging in book discussions, my students are able to share their opinions about the books they read, and improve their reading skills by practicing reading comprehension strategies. This set of new books will provide a greater choice of "just right" books for my students and support their love for literature.
Our classroom library is the main source of books for these enthusiastic group of readers.
These new books will support the reading needs of 30 fifth-graders with a wide range of abilities and interest.
