My Students

We are a K-12, public, charter school in Utah. We are an excelling Title I school with over 40% of our students receiving free or reduced-price lunches.

Our students have a passion for learning.

As a school, we excel annually, testing as one of the top schools in the state on standardized tests. We do more with less and are proud of it. My students are eager to learn and gain new knowledge each day, and it shows in their efforts and enthusiasm!

My Project

The coronavirus pandemic has had many far-reaching effects, and I'm sure that there are many we haven't even considered yet. Many of my students, for various reasons, do not have access to books when they need to stay at home instead of coming to school. For this reason, I would like to help the families in my classroom strengthen their family libraries to provide their children with opportunities to read and come together that will increase their love of reading as well as impact their individual reading proficiencies.

There are countless studies that show the effects of access to books on children's reading abilities, as well as how a reading-friendly environment can establish a love of reading within a child.

What better time is there to go on an adventure through reading a book together than the time we suddenly have before us during quarantine? Even for students who are not currently quarantined, many have felt the impact of not being in a classroom for an extended period of time during their school career. Many students struggled with learning how to even be part of a classroom this year and while many are making great academic progress, there is still a lot to be done to help them close the gaps created by the pandemic.

This project would give each student in my class five books to enrich their home libraries.
