My Project

The students in my room are a diverse group of gentlemen who share one common interest: a love of learning in an environment where they can be comfortable. This year, we are embarking on our first experiences together as a class community in a bigger, intimidating building. Despite facing daily challenges, my students deserve the opportunity to come to school and learn something new every day! The students in my room need to develop appropriate coping skills in order to address behavior concerns. By modeling appropriate coping skills and building a positive community, I believe these students will have the same opportunities available to them as their non-disabled peers.

I have always been one to encourage a sense of community, collaboration, and choice within our self-contained Emotional Support classroom.

Flexible seating has been identified as a way to benefit classrooms in six key areas: community, choice, collaboration, movement, comfort, and sensory input. When students are uncomfortable, they are distracted and unproductive. Comfortable students are believed to be calm, attentive, and productive. Flexible seating is believed to stimulate students' senses. This can help children focus and process information. I believe that children learn when they have control over their environment. The addition of flexible seating in our classroom will allow students to change their position and seating in the classroom as needed. This upcoming school year will provide many transitions to the students in my classroom as we are moving from our smaller comfortable space to a much larger building and room! I’d love to have different work areas where the students can select their seating choices while working independently within their small groups. Your donation would greatly assist in making sure our transition to a new space a little less anxious! Thank you so much!
