Changing and Challenging the World Through Spoken Word Poetry
My students need poetry resources for gaining both a historical context for spoken word and slam poetry as well as tools for creating and crafting original work.

My Students
The seniors have been waiting to take my performing arts class for years! It is finally their time to shine in the spotlight. We are a small school in a large urban school district. Kids come to us from across the city making our classrooms rich and complex communities. They are dynamic and thought provoking, challenging their teachers to bring their A game every day they set foot in the classroom.
Our students are confident, persuasive, and adventurous!
They will hit the boards with gusto and take advantage of every opportunity to learn and grow through the arts in their final year of high school.
My Project
For many students, what they know about poetry is limited to what they have experienced in English classes. Often dry, dull and with little connection to their lives and experiences. The materials provided through this grant will help us all, students and teachers expand our knowledge and understand about the history of spoken word, slam poetry, and music as a vehicle for social justice.
Poetry and music can offer not only an outlet for creativity and expression but a space to challenge the thinking of our communities.
Our students are seeing and experience a world in which they have complex and often confusing feelings about. It is a pivotal time in the United States and as educators, we must support students in navigating all the twists and turns.
The poetry materials in this grant will support this learning and development for all involved. The two co-teachers of this course will use materials to inform student understanding and knowledge of the history of spoken word as well as the influence of specific groups on the genre (for example: the African-American community and women). We will also look at links to music as a form of storytelling and , such as the evolution of protest music as well as rap.
